Traditional Chinese painting mainly combines calligraphy and poetry, which is what we call “书诗画 (calligraphy, poetry and painting)”Calligraphy and poetry are integrated and resonate with painting. Therefore, calligraphy, poetry, and painting are what we call “Chinese painting is a

trinity art”, which makes Chinese painting reach the highest state of art. For example, the painter Law Yuan’s painting 群舞千尺松 (THE DANCING THOUSAND-FOOT PINES.), combined

with Chinese calligraphy and poetry “后院一声风里闻, 惊见群舞千尺松 (There was a sound of rhythm in the backyard; it was surprising to see thousand-foot pine trees dancing.)”. The first sentence of the poem written by the painter describes that he heard some sounds with rhythm,

then he walked out to his backyard, and he was amazed by a group of old and tall pine trees

swinging, and they looked like dancing, linking to the second sentence of the poem. This poem

not only leads us to see the “dancing pine trees”, but also imagine hearing the pleasant rhythm.

Therefore, the calligraphy, poem, and painting echo each other. That means the three are

combined into one, the so-called “Chinese painting is a trinity art”, which makes Chinese

painting reach the highest state of art.
