Traditional Chinese painting mainly combines calligraphy and poetry, which is what we call “书诗画 (calligraphy, poetry and painting)”. Calligraphy and poetry are integrated and resonate with painting. Therefore, calligraphy, poetry, and painting what we call “Chinese painting is a trinity art”, which makes Chinese painting reach the highest state of art. For example, the painter Law Yuan’s painting, 鸟语花香 (BIRDS SINGING AND FLOWERS FRAGRANT), combined with Chinese calligraphy and poetry “後庭传來鸟语声, 原来无处不花香 (The sound of birds singing came from the backyard, and it turned out that the fragrance of flowers was everywhere.)” The first sentence of the poem written by the painter, Law Yuen, describes the sound of birds singing woke up the painter in the morning, then it led him to open the backyard door, and smelled the fragrance of blowing flowers everywhere linking the second sentence of the poem. This poem not only makes us see the beauty of flowers and birds, but also make us seem to hear the bird’s singing and to smell the flowers’ fragrance. Therefore, calligraphy, poetry, and painting echo each other. That means the three are combined into one, the so-called “Chinese painting is a trinity art”, which makes Chinese painting reach the highest state of art.

(Note: Here the word “trinity” mentioned is not the religion’s “trinity”.)
