One day in May in the summer, the painter, Law Yuen heard a chirping sound coming from outside the window. When the painter opens the door to the backyard. He was excited to see a golden cicada grabbing an orchid leaf and chirping non-stop. Then, the painter wanted to see more of its detail and tried to approach the golden cicada slowly and quietly. However, when he approached about 5 feet away from the golden cicada, the golden cicada suddenly flew away at lightning speed. The next morning, when the painter went to the backyard to see if the golden cicada had come back; but it never came back. This was the first time the painter saw the golden cicada. This rare phenomenon inspired the artist to decide to create a painting that combined calligraphy and poem of the scene he experienced.
The painter’s poem: 窗外传来唧唧声, 院惊见蘭上金蝉。(There was a chirping sound outside the window, and the courtyard was surprised to see a golden cicada grabbing on the orchids.)
